I am working on a concept for a new map guide book, and I wanted to get some feedback from all my friends. If you would rather email than leave a comment, most of you know my info. Any good insight you can provide really helps me in finding the proper solution for this!! Thanks!
• Do you use maps? yes
ReplyDelete• What are you generally looking for when you refer to a map? (places, roads, or regions) places or cross streets
• What do you find useless on a map? when it tells me where every damn thing is. Like hotels and restaurants etc. If I'm on vacation I already know where I'm staying and it would be helpful to know like a zone where there is food etc. Maybe like a colored section instead of little icons. Of course that only applies in places where things are grouped but almost all cities have little pods where you can eat, shop, get gas, etc etc. I also don't need to see every tiny river...if its a huge body of water I'll recognize pertaining to directions, cool, if not it just adds more clutter.
• What do you find helpful on a map? marking one way streets. Maybe icons to say where to hail a cab etc. Thats always annoying when traveling somewhere new without a car, not knowing how to get a ride from A to B.
• Do you find illustrations of landmarks on a map helpful? i prefer icons , the simpler and less cluttered the less frustrating.
• Do you find symbols and color coding helpful? yes yes yes
• Have you ever used a map in a foreign country? no
• What was most helpful about maps you used to get around there? n/a
• What information do you expect a map guide book to have? if its a book i expect sections on everything I can think to do. Where to eat. Where to shop. Where to catch some live Entertainment. Possible places of interest. Info to transportation especially to and from the airport. Depending on where I am I dig extra not normal stuff like nearest tattoo shop. where can i skydive? I only ever think to do ridiculous things on vacation and never do b/c I can't find good info.
• Where do you get your map information? my mom gets me stupid books from AAA that don't help much at all b/c they just review every damn hotel in a 25 miles radius
• Do you buy guide books, or pick up in-town guides? if i'm staying awhile or its a cool place where i know there is lots to see/do then hells yeah
• Do you prefer a hand held size, or larger size guide book? hand held seems a bit too small. Probably medium sized...something wide enough to still fit in my back pocket but it can be taller as i usually have a bag with me. Nothing obscene though
• Do you like fold-out maps? NO!
• Do you prefer maps designed in with the content of the book? Yes or like little magazines so you can dogear or fold back pages without getting all turned around in folds.
HI! You don't know me, but I found your store on Etsy and then followed the link to your blog. And whaddya know? I love maps. I was going to answer each of your questions, but around my fifth paragraph, I decided to just write my own blog entry about maps. It was about time anyway. If you'd like, check it out! I should have it done in an hour or so.
